The Gasindo (or Gasindio) was, in Lombard society, a warrior particularly linked to the sovereign by a relationship not yet comparable to the feudal vassal-beneficiary bond: submission to the noble corresponded to a guarantee of royal protection. A trusted man of the king, he was - at least formally - removed from the direct control of the duke in charge of the territory in which he lived. In the Middle Ages the Gasindi constituted the comitatus , that is, the retinue of the rex, or the duke-sovereign, and who faithfully accompanied him, remaining alongside him both in times of peace and war, providing for the defense of the person and the activity of advisors and controllers peripherals. They were chosen among men-at-arms of high or low rank, as well as among free men (Arimanni) expert in the exercise of arms but also in writing and judicial practices. The bond of devotion and loyalty that bound them to their lord, and by virtue of which they were ready to carry out any commissioned task, was a source of great privileges and protections, also reflected in the form of the judicial procedure, which for the Gasindi facilitated compared to that of other free men, as is confirmed by the possibility that they had, if they had been struck by the ducal tribunal, to appeal to the king.
