Taken as a whole, the war in North America, fought between the American colonies (and their allies) and the British Army (and its allies) from 1765 to 1783, involved relatively few mounted troops. France, allied with the emerging American nation, did not dispatch large numbers of cavalry units across the Atlantic; instead, it sent only a limited contingent of light cavalrymen specifically selected for overseas service.
In practice, the French government first mobilized cavalry units already stationed within its American possessions, namely those garrisoned in its Caribbean colonies. The **Belsunce** and **Condé Dragoon Regiments**, based in Saint-Domingue, each contributed a company to support the American army.
