The word Ga'an (Western Apache) - or Gaa'he (Eastern Apache) - refers to powerful mountain spirits who, in Apache mythology, are considered friendly entities for the tribe. The dancers, during the Ga'an ceremony, are considered as incarnated spirits; throughout the ritual dances they "are" the Ga'an spirits, who actually move in the world of the Apache "people" and, as such, are treated as sacred beings. There are several narratives that summarize the origin of this particular myth. One of these is that the Ga'an were responsible for the liberation and diffusion into the world of the spirits of the animal world, which were originally locked deep underground, hidden and imprisoned by Crow (the ancestral raven). After the intervention of the spirits of the mountains the animals were able to be freed and since then they have been able to provide food and sustenance to the "people of men"...(...)
