The Anglo-American War (also known as the War of 1812, after the year it broke out) was a conflict fought between the United Kingdom and the United States of America from June 1812 to February 1815. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814, which came into effect on February 17, 1815. The United States thus faced the world’s greatest naval power in a conflict that would have a tremendous impact on the young country’s future.
Initially, the United States suffered many costly defeats, both at the hands of regular British troops and the Canadian militias supported by Native American tribes allied with the British crown; notably, the capture and burning of Washington, the nation’s new capital. However, American forces were able to repel British invasions in New York, Baltimore, and New Orleans, bolstering confidence in ultimate victory and fostering a renewed sense of patriotism in the nation. Even today, many in the United States celebrate the War of 1812 as the “Second War of Independence.”
