One-of-a-kind collector’s piece, assembled and painted on a wooden base.
Following the death of Theodoric in 526 AD, the kingdom was faced with both internal and external challenges and tensions. As Ostrogothic power weakened, Emperor Justinian I sought to reassert Eastern Roman control over Italy, leading to a series of conflicts known as the Gothic Wars (535–554 AD).
The war was the result of a policy that had already been taking shape for some time, aimed at reconquering the territories that had belonged to the Western Roman Empire before the upheavals brought about by the barbarian kingdoms.
The first step was the seizure of Africa from the Vandals and their military annihilation; the second was the recovery of the Ostrogothic territories, at that time ruled by King Theodahad, nephew of Theodoric.
The conflict began in 535 with the landing in Sicily of a Byzantine army led by the general Belisarius. Advancing up the Italian peninsula, Belisarius' forces defeated the Gothic troops first under King Theodahad and then under Witiges, reconquering many important cities, including Rome and Ravenna.
The accession of Totila to the Gothic throne, together with the recall of Belisarius to Constantinople, enabled the Goths to retake many of the positions they had lost. Only with the arrival of a new army under General Narses were the imperial forces able to regain the upper hand. Following Totila's death in battle, the Ostrogothic Kingdom reached the end of its historical trajectory with the Battle of the Lattari Mountains...
