The Gasindus (or Gasindius) was, in Lombard society, a warrior bound to the king by a personal relationship that cannot yet be equated with the later feudal bond of vassalage. In return for his loyalty to the ruler, he enjoyed the king's protection. As a trusted member of the royal entourage, he was—at least formally—exempt from the direct authority of the duke governing the territory in which he lived.
During the Middle Ages, the Gasindi formed the comitatus, the personal retinue of the king (or of a duke-ruler), faithfully accompanying him in both times of peace and war. They were responsible for protecting his person while also serving as advisers and royal representatives in the territories under his rule.
Gasindi were chosen from warriors of both high and low rank, as well as from free men (arimanni) skilled not only in the use of arms but also in writing and judicial practice. The bond of loyalty and devotion that united them with their lord, and which made them ready to carry out any task entrusted to them, granted them significant privileges and legal protections. These privileges were also reflected in judicial proceedings, which were more favorable to Gasindi than to other free men. For example, if convicted by a ducal court, they had the right to appeal directly to the king.
