The cavalry of all three Légions Volontaires étrangers de la Marine wore a hussar uniform and, like the original hussars, were classified as light cavalry. For historiography, hussars were an expression of the Hungarian army dating back to the 15th century; however, they were structured and permanently organized later, at the beginning of the 17th century. Subsequently, they were adopted by Frederick II in the Kingdom of Prussia and finally brought to the glory of military deeds thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte. A contribution to the history of the specialty was also made by Poland, which with King Stephen I Bathory, between 1574 and 1576, saw the establishment of the Winged Hussar units. Although inspired by the Hungarian example, they were armed with long lances and solid armor and came to represent the "heavy" side of the Polish-Lithuanian cavalry.
