Alaric I, also known as Flavius Alaric (Flavius Alaricus in Latin, Alareiks in Gothic; Peuce Island, in present-day Romania, c. 370 – Cosenza, 410), was King of the Visigoths from 395 until his death. He was responsible for the famous Sack of Rome in 410, after which he died suddenly while, most probably, making his way towards Africa. He was the first true king of the Visigoths, the western branch of the Goths, who, after approximately twenty years of uninterrupted warfare, came to understand the need for a king who could exercise supreme authority and administer their power...
