Abu al-ʿAbbās "al-Mustaẓhir bi-llah" Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Muqtadi (in Arabic أبو العباس "المستظهر بالله" أحمد بن عبد الله المقتدي‎), known to history by the honorific title (laqab) al-Mustazhir bi-llah (lit.: He Who Seeks God's Help), was the 34th Abbasid Caliph and was born near Baghdad in the spring of 1078. Son and heir of Caliph al-Muqtadi, he ascended to the throne in 1094 AD. His father had a concubine at court, his favorite, named Taif Al-Afwah, an Egyptian woman who gave birth to the future al-Mustaẓhir bi-llah. When his father died on February 3, 1094, at the young age of 37, his son found himself assuming the office of Caliph at just sixteen years of age. The adolescent thus found himself surrounded and advised by a cosmopolitan court — although often devoted to palace intrigues — and had to struggle to manage considerable political and spiritual power over a territory which, during his reign between 1094 and 1118, stretched from the shores of North Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. Although less well known than other figures who played a prominent role in the Arab history of the Crusades, and although considered irrelevant to the course of events by much of classical historiography, he remains significant within the more limited context of his own dynasty and, in particular, in relation to the period of the First Crusade...
