The only way Russia could take its rightful place among the nations was to modernize; and to modernize, Russia would have to look westward.\u003cbr\u003eOne of the aims of the Grand Embassy that Peter undertook in Western Europe in 1697 was to acquire first-hand knowledge of European industrial techniques, and the needs created by his plans against Sweden, beginning in 1700, made industrial development an urgent matter. Upon his return home he immediately set to work, issuing a series of decrees that transformed Russia. Western technology was introduced, the coinage system was reformed, and the Western Julian calendar became standard: the Russian year 7206 would become 1698, the first of a new era. Since outward appearance could reflect inner thought and character, Peter ensured that Russians adopted Western European dress. Moreover—and most importantly—the first steps were taken toward \u003cstrong\u003ecreating an army on the Western model\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003eDuring Peter’s reign, the forms of government of his predecessors gave way to a de facto autocracy. In 1711 he abolished the \u003cem\u003eBoyar Duma\u003c\/em\u003e (Council of Boyars) and, by decree, established the Senate as the supreme organ of the state. Its tasks were to coordinate the activities of various central and local bodies, to supervise the collection and use of revenue, and to draft laws in accordance with his edicts. The historical inspiration for the subject can be identified thanks to the frontal plate of the helmet. The plate, mounted as the front element of an oriental-style helmet, belongs to my personal collection. It is an exact reproduction of the original preserved at the Bargello Museum in Florence, known as the ‘Plate of King Agilulf’ (or ‘Plate of the Triumph of Agilulf’), a medieval repoussé copper artefact plated in gold. According to the most widely accepted scholarly interpretation, it once adorned the front of a parade helmet belonging to a high-ranking figure. The plate has been interpreted as a commemorative piece celebrating the siege of Rome in 593, which forced Pope Gregory I to pay three hundred pounds of gold to the Lombards in order to prevent the sack of the city, thus acknowledging the subordination of the defeated.\u003cbr\u003eHere, then, emerges our principal source of inspiration: Agilulf, first Duke of Turin and later King of the Lombards in Italy.\u003cbr\u003eThe historian Paul the Deacon—a Lombard monk and medieval chronicler, author of the invaluable “\u003cstrong\u003eHistoria Langobardorum\u003c\/strong\u003e”—records that after the death of King Authari, the widowed Queen Theodelinda, greatly beloved by the Lombards, chose Agilulf, Duke of Turin, a strong and valiant man, as her new husband in 590 and as sovereign of the Lombard Kingdom the following year.\u003cbr\u003eThe new king’s first military actions were directed against rebellious Lombard dukes who had allied themselves with the kingdom’s enemies: Franks, Romans, and Byzantines.\u003cbr\u003eLater, with the support of Avar and Slavic allies, Agilulf fought further rebellious dukes and campaigned against Roman cities including Cremona and Mantua, before expanding into Tuscany. Through her\/his direction, the scale model can become more or less dramatic, more or less poetic.
